Bent KneeYou Know What They MeanGive Us the Gold2019Progressive Rock / Experimental / Art RockSpotifyObservationI am a big fan of Bent Knee's previous album "Land Animal". This one, after the first few listens, failed to grab my attention as much as that, but it's still quite good. Hopefully it will keep growing on me as I listen.07/10

FoalsEverything Not Saved Will Be Lost (Part 1)In Degrees2019IndieSpotifyObservationWhat a disappointment... Foals are one of my all-time favorite bands. I love all of their albums up until now. I especially love it when they go all dance beats or post-rock on me. Unfortunately, both this and Part 2 just feel uninspired and boring. Nothing feels adventurous as it did before, and everything feels incredibly safe and inside the lines. I hope we will get something better next time.06/10

Golden AshesIn the Lugubrious Silence of Eternal NightAmongst the Mossy Tombs / From Grace Into Utter Ruin2020Blackgaze / Post-Black MetalSpotify / BandcampObservationWow, this is an interesting project. It has this ethereal feel throughout, contrasted with this harsh wall of noise created by saturated atmospheric synths. Yeah, there are no guitars in this thing, just synths, bass, drums, and vocals! Crazy! Beautiful melodies contrasted with spine-tingling vocals and chaos. I am absolutely into this.08/10
Kayo DotHubardoFloodgate2013Avant-Garde / Black Metal / Jazz Fusion / Chamber Music / ExperimentalSpotify / BandcampObservationI had this on my "To Listen" playlist over on Spotify and just started playing it on a 1h+ commute back home. I was floored. The first song's growls kinda put me off (is it me or do they sound weak / kinda funny?) but everything just went up from there. There's just so much to this album, that trying to write it all down here would not fit the page. Fantastic. I need to listen to more of their stuff. And I should try to get into maudlin of the Well next.09/10

ちゃみ ちゃみ ちゃーみん / 演歌ナトリウム2018Pop / ElectronicSpotifyObservationI've always been fascinated by the work of Yasutaka Nakata (he's the producer/songwriter for Kyary and Perfume, to name two). Most of modern Pop music really gets on my nerves. I do enjoy a lot of Pop though, don't get me wrong, just not a big fan of the overproduced stuff you can hear on TV and on the radio on loop nowadays. I feel like a lot of what is out there now is too centered on sex, being "hot", money or the same-old-same-old "OMG why did he/she break up with me *BibleThump*". It's tiring.

Enter this guy, whose Pop compositions are actually fun, quirky and (most of the time) different. His projects don't really sound like most Pop out there. There's a lot of genre-bending too, he even mixes Pop with Jazz sensibilities at times! There's somewhat of an experimental feeling to the instrumentals. That's how I became a huge fan of his work, especially with Kyary and Perfume. This album is fun but it is far from his (and her) best. Some really fun songs here though, and some of my favorites by them.

maudlin of the WellPart the SecondAn Excerpt from [...]2009Progressive Rock / Avant-Garde / ExperimentalSpotify / BandcampObservationDamn this album has some beautiful, intricate stuff going on. It's way too dense to make an opinion of it after just a few listens, but I am very eager to get more into it, and afterward delve more into their previous albums. Beautiful stuff.07/10
Mr. BungleDisco VolanteCarry Stress in the Jaw (+ Secret Song)1995Avant-Garde / Rock / Metal / Jazz Fusion / ExperimentalSpotifyObservationMy favorite Mr. Bungle album. It actually used to be my least favorite. First Mr. Bungle was my favorite. Then it was California for a long time. I actually kinda disliked 60% of this album until it all finally clicked in my head. It is probably on my top 5 albums of all time, and Mr. Bungle is my second favorite. Yeah, California became my third favorite (still basically a perfect album, IMO). Crazy.10/10
Mr. BungleMr. BungleCarousel1991Avant-Garde / Rock / Metal / Funk / ExperimentalSpotifyObservationI think I get re-addicted to this album every year. I mean, this band. And usually in the order of release. Basically one of my favorite bands of all time, with my favorite singer and bassist of all time. A mesh of experimental funk with rock, metal, and circus. Unbelievably creative and insane. My second favorite album by them.10/10
NegeroSilence is Worse Than WarLipstick / Flapjack2012Avant-Garde / Experimental / Rock / Math RockBandcampObservationA criminally unknown band. I found this band from a random suggestion in some last.fm shoutbox for a band which I can't recall now and I got immediately addicted. Their albums are free to download on bandcamp and I absolutely recommend them, especially this one. It's hard to describe what they sound like... It's like equal amounts of weird and catchy if that's even possible. They're insane. I contacted one of the members a few years ago to ask about news from the band and unfortunately it seems they are all living far away from each other so their future is currently unknown. They did send me a vinyl record for this album, signed and with a personal message as a thank you, and I am forever thankful to them for it.10/10
NumenoreanAdoreN/A2019Post-Black MetalSpotifyObservationWhat the hell happened? I love Numenorean's first album. It's a great piece of Atmospheric Post-Black Metal. "Adore" was at a point on IndieGoGo and I was very inclined to back it. I'm glad I didn't. This sounds nothing like the predecessor (which is not a bad thing of course, in most cases), it sounds like a metalcore band most of the time. I couldn't really believe what I was hearing. It's not awful, but what the hell happened?04/10

So HideousLaurestineThe True Pierce2015Post-Black Metal / OrchestralSpotify / BandcampObservationThe feels are real with this one. The mixture of the soundtrack-like melodic, beautiful orchestra with the intensity and loudness of black metal and the atmospheric nature of post-black / blackgaze make this album a goosebump fest. The only downside to this album is that sometimes it builds into nothing. There are a couple of moments here and there where I can imagine the explosion of emotion that is coming next, but it never lives up to that expectation. Maybe that's on me, I don't know because there's already a lot of feels in here. Excellent nonetheless.09/10

UnprocessedCovenantMillenium2018Progressive Metal / DjentSpotifyObservationI will forever be remembered of the week my son was born when listening to this album. I was incredibly addicted to it after listening to a single from their at the time, upcoming album "Artificial Void". I listened to this album while working, while taking the bus to the maternity hospital, and taking the bus back home. Incredibly catchy and melodic Progressive Metal with some "Djent" riffs that really hit hard.08/10

Violet ColdNoir KidEuphoria2020Experimental / Post-Black Metal / Blackgaze / ElectronicSpotify / BandcampObservation🙁 My first reaction to seeing this on my "Release Radar" over on Spotify was: "You know it's gonna be a good day when one of your current favorite artists drops an album out of nowhere!". That enthusiasm quieted down very quickly. You can see over on my "Albums Heard in 2019" list that Violet Cold's previous release, "kOsmik" was one of my favorite releases of the year. Plus, I can't give a score lower than 8 to basically everything else this man has done in the past. This, however, is just not clicking with me. Violet Cold tried to mix Post-Black Metal with electronic music before, to great success, but this one seems like a mess. A lot of the vocal lines seem out of tune, the production is surprisingly mediocre, it's hard to sometimes make out what the hell is happening, and the electronic segments feel out of place, and like they don't belong, unlike other past experiments by Violet Cold. Maybe it will grow on me, I don't know, but for now, I am very disappointed.05/10
VukariAevum2019Post-Black MetalSpotifyObservationFantastic, bleak, beautiful, atmospheric, immersive. Probably my favorite album released in 2019 together with Violet Cold's "kOsmik".09/10
